A Symphony of Waterfalls

do go chasing waterfalls

This tour will take you from Skógarfoss, along the river Skógá passing by and enjoying the view of number of exciting waterfalls on the Fimmvörduháls trail. (“Foss” means waterfall in Icelandic. “Á” means river in Icelandic). Skógarfoss is one of the best known of Iceland’s numerous waterfalls, located on the South Coast of Iceland close to the main coastal ringroad that takes you around the country. This 60-meter-high waterfall is an impressive landmark and a “must see” for most visitors. However, there is more to see than Skógafoss alone. It is only one of many waterfalls decorating the rivers and canyons of this area.

During the first part of this tour we will do some 5 km of walking inland along the river Skógá towards the pass between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. You will see a number of fascinating waterfalls; the many sisters of the main waterfall where we start out. But you have not seen it all! We will leave the Skógá river and walk across the Heath of Skógar to another river, further to the east, named Kverna. When we reach Kverna we follow the river back down to the lowlands passing number of gorgeous waterfalls. After a 5-6 to hour hike, we return to where we started, in front of Skógafoss.

The trail takes you through landscapes shaped by glaciers and erosion, decorated with canyons and waterfalls. On a clear day you will see the two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull (“jökull” means glacier in Icelandic) and across the sandy plains towards the Atlantic Ocean and the Westmann Islands. You will hear stories about how these glaciers and the two vicious volcanoes that lie dormant beneath them have shaped the coastline as well as the history of the people who have lived here for the last twelve hundred years.

You need to dress properly for this hike, be prepared for rain and wear good walking boots. Be prepared with energy rich food for this about 15 km. moderate difficult hike.
