The only glacier you can see from Reykjavík
The Snæfellsjökull glacier rises 1446m (4745 ft) above sea level on the Snæfellsnes peninsula which gives the glaciar its name. The first known human ascent took place in 1754. The mountain underneath is an active volcano, having been built up through numerous eruptions during the last 800,000 years. The summit crater is 200m (650 ft) deep, full of ice, though overall the glacier has shrunken in recent years due to climate change.
The flanks of the glacier are particularly attractive with intertwining lava streams forming long “plaits” down the slopes. The latest eruption was very large and took place around 1800 years ago.
A source of inspiration
The glacier has been a never-ending source of inspiration for poets and artists from around the world, it has featured in works by Jules Verne and Halldór Laxness, Iceland´s only Nobel Price winner (1955) . Indeed, more than a few people say they feel a powerful influence from the glacier and consider it to be one of the world’s seven most potent energy sources.
Well prepared…
For the glacial walk you’ll need sturdy boots, layers of clothing that are made of breathable fabrics. For the upper body I recommend three layers under a wind and waterproof jacket. It should be easy add or remove layers depending on how warm you feel. For the legs two layers in addition to wind and water protective pants that can be added on if needed. Hats, gloves/mittens and warm socks are important. In a backpack I advise you to have energy bar, sandwich and something warm to drink as well as a water bottle. It is also good to have in the backpack one extra warm jacket to wear on the top.
